St Austell Golf Club hosted its annual Junior Open on Sunday in glorious and very hot sunshine. Over 100 juniors participated in a range of competitions, and there were some fantastic scores posted, with St Austell players nicely placed in the results. Finn Rule (West Cornwall) won the main event with a terrific gross 67, Declan Allen (Tehidy) claiming the nett competition with a score of 65, and 9 year old Hugo Watson from St Austell won the Stableford event with a majestic 43 points.
Junior Organiser Gary Warren explained that because of the heat, all the juniors had to have suncream applied to be able to play. “We were then worried by the heat, so we had a buggy out on the course all day checking on the players and giving them water and ice lollies! It was a long and tiring day but I think everyone enjoyed themselves, especially on our new Par 3 course. It really is great to see so many young golfers out on the course.”
