St Austell overcome stubborn Looe GC in Presidents Trophy Win – 31st Oct 2021.
After a horrendous night of rain, the course stood up well, and other than the usual “damp spots” played fair and true in very windy conditions with the odd “sharp shower”.
There were five new additions to the team representing the Club for the first time looking forward to the challenge ahead and earning valuable experience.
The team was led out by Kevin Roach in match 1, and Paul Kennedy in match 2, with both securing early points for the home team. match 3, saw Chris Trethewey have a good battle with his opponent sadly losing out on the 17th green. In match 4, Jack Richards took to the course full of enthusiasm and played strongly against the “big hitting” Looe team member eventually winning on the 18th.
St Austell had a 3 – 1 advantage with the other 5 matches out on the course. In match 5, we had Steve Humphreys who after a topped first tee shot (sorry Steve, I’ve been there!) managed to win the opening hole and go on to secure a ½ point.
In match 6, Aiden Reek again had a tough game chipping in on the 16th green to get the game back to all square and gaining another ½ point for St Austell. Match 7, saw the final of the debutants where Russ Withers had the match play “gods” against him and having performed well in the conditions was undone by his opponent’s skill of “holeing out” from anywhere losing 2 down on the last hole.
In match 8, had the evergreen and experienced Danny Pearce, who took control early on, but in his words “had to have a chat with himself” to pull away and win another point for us with a fine result of 4-2.
In the remaining and final match on the course, we had Paul Edmunds who had the huge task of taking on Cornwall County player, Kieran Faulkner, losing with on the last Putt and Birdie to Kieran on the 18th, Giving St Austell a home victory of 5-4!
I would like to thank President’s Team Captain Brian Osborne for announcing the players onto the tee and for Looe GC in which with spirit the match was played they were excellent.
Also, a big thank you to the caddies and the Spector’s who even with an extra hour in bed braved the weather conditions to support the Team and of course the Presidents Team players for a superb win!
Next up we have another good draw at Home to Mullion on the 5th of December.
Thanks Presidents Team!
