REPORT
FROM THE GREEN CHAIRMAN - SPRING 2010 You will all have seen the vast improvement in the condition of the greens over the last month. This is due to a number of factors not least the warm, damper weather which is promoting good growth all over the course. All the greens have received two top-dressings and have been over-seeded. A further top-dressing and over-seeding will take place in early June. These works, together with regular aeration should see the continued improvement of the playing surfaces over the coming months. Work on the watering system has now been completed and the system recharged. Unfortunately, this has shown up a couple of weak points in the pipe work. These have been repaired and, subject to further leaks, will soon be commissioned and ready for use. Members should be aware, however, that the watering system will not be used to make the greens soft. Its purpose is to allow the green staff to keep the putting surfaces in top condition. This in turn will make them more receptive to a well struck shot. The hoops protecting the fringes of the greens have now been removed. Please do not take trolleys, or buggies, onto the fringes between the greens and greenside bunkers. Tees Maintenance on the tees continues. Your actions here can also help us improve these areas – especially on the Par 3’s. After playing your shot please use the divot mix in the boxes to repair your divot. Although this does not contain seed it does level the playing surface – the green staff will be dressing and over-seeding the tees on a regular basis. Fairways These are beginning to grow well, especially on the lower part of the course and are being cut regularly at 17mm. The green staff have undertaken some divoting but do not have the time to complete the whole course. To this end we will be organising a couple of evenings divoting work by volunteer members – please keep an eye on the notice boards for details. The 6th fairway is being reshaped slightly narrowed by the trees on the left to allow a wide semi-rough. This, it is hoped, will prevent a well struck shot along the centre of the fairway rolling into the trees. RoughThis is also growing well on the lower part of the course and is being cut regularly at 65/70mm. We have also added an extra width of semi-rough cut at 30mm. The Green Committee have also recognised concerns raised by members over the lack of growth to the right of the 2nd green which is allowing balls to roll out of bounds. We have decided to give the grass a helping hand with the judicious use of fertiliser along the right and back of the green. To assist this growth we have also decided to ban buggies and unnecessary greens machinery from this area for the foreseeable future. Please take all buggies to the left of the green. Whilst trolleys and foot traffic will still be allowed please do not make unnecessary transits over this area. Further fertilising will take place all along this side of the golf course in the following areas: 1st Rough – up the right side of the fairway to increase the growth on the old track and prevent balls rolling into the bottom of the hedge. 13th Rough – especially on the corner by the 150yds post, where growth is particularly sparse, and along to the green to prevent balls rolling into the gorse. 14th Rough – along the whole length of the hole to prevent balls rolling into the trees and gorse. General A little bit of work by all members and visitors can help maintain the condition of the course so please: **Repair pitch marks – not just yours but any other you see. **Replace your divots. **Rake bunkers after use. **Place all litter in the bins provided on every tee. If you have any concerns or ideas for the course please do not hesitate to speak with me or one of the Green Committee who, together with the green staff, are committed to giving you the best golf course possible with the resources available.

Junior Organiser Alan Lund writes "This week should have seen the Junior team playing the first round of the Tamar Cup against Dartmouth. Unfortunately Dartmouth could not raise a team and the Juniors now progress through to the next round. At home eight juniors turned up and played a match play knockout. The format was over six holes with the winner progressing through to play another person in the next round. In very hot sunny conditions this proved to be a very enjoyable and social competition. After the first round results came in this put Josh Omlo and Ben Pill in the first semi final with Ben coming out on top. The second semi saw Sam Marchant loose very narrowly to Zak Omlo. The final was a very closely fought match with both Ben Pill and Zak Omlo both having puts to win the match with Zak holding his nerve to hole the winning put. There was also a plate competition with Harry Trays narrowly beating Lucy Lund in the final. This week also sees the Juniors take on Perranporth in the Bolitho cup and the team should be full of confidence after beating Newquay at home last week by the margin of 5 ½ to ½." |

Junior Organiser Alan Lund writes:- St Austell Golf Club juniors turned up at Truro Golf club for the final leg of their Triangular Golf Tournament. This is a new competition aimed at giving the higher handicap and B team players the chance to gain valuable experience towards representing the main Junior team. They were greeted by near perfect golfing conditions and did not disappoint with the quality of some of the golf. The Three Presidents trophy was on offer for the winners which was kindly donated collectively by the Presidents of each club. Unfortunately the St Austell were probably too far behind after the first two rounds to have a realistic chance of taking the trophy but did manage to come out on top on the day scoring 86 points, with Carlyon Bay scoring 83 and Truro 71. This left Carlyon Bay comfortable and deserving overall winners. All clubs can be very proud of the way all players conducted themselves and the Truro President commented in his presentation speech how delighted he was to see all boys and girls dressed so smartly for the presentation, a tradition which he felt very strongly about but not always upheld. St Austell can be very proud of their achievements in this competition as they had a very young side which will have gained valuable experience. In the first match Lucy Lund and Ben Pill lost 2 down with Conner Pearce and Sam Marchant losing by the same margin although both pairs played some very good golf. Jordan Phillips and Josh Omlo won 3 up and the best was left to the last with Will Houseman and Zak Omlo winning 7 up. |

Junior Organiser Alan Lund writes:- "St
Austell B Team Juniors played the second round of their
Triangular tournament with Truro and Carlyon Bay yesterday. The
format was four ball better ball match play but playing all 18
holes with points either won or lost depending on each match
outcome. St Austell with home advantage had high hopes to gain
some ground on the other two clubs. Sadly this did not
materialise with both the older and more experienced
players from Truro and Carlyon Bay showing their experience. St
Austell however must take encouragement from their efforts and
the experience of playing in match conditions can only help them
when aspiring to play a higher standard of golf. Conner
Pearce and James Dalby lost 6 down Despite the result the team are looking forward to the final match at Truro on 11th April." |

Junior Organiser Alan Lund writes: Not many juniors turned up this Sunday which was probably something to do with Mothers Day. However they played a match play competition. Two captains were drawn out of the hat and then their team was also drawn. Josh Omlo captained team A and had his twin brother Zak and Conner Pearce. Team B was captained by Lucy Lund and she had Ben Pill and Dave Menhenitt in her team. The two Captains went off first and the match was very close until Lucy had a two on the 16th to go 2 up with two to play and then and eventually won three up meaning she had 13 points and Josh had 7 (having started with 10 each). In the second match the scores were levelled when Conner Pearce had a 3 up victory over Ben Pill reversing the 13 points to 7 score line. The scoring system used for this match meant that all matches had to play all 18 holes and after the first two matches the score stood all level. This meant everything was dependant on the last match and in the end Dave Menhenitt had a comfortable victory over Zak Omlo winning 5 up which meant the final team scores were 35 to Lucy’s team and 25 to Josh’s. This proved to be a popular way to play match play and can only help the Juniors when they start their extensive list of fixtures for the coming season. Next week see’s the Juniors playing for the first cup of the season and this will be followed by the presentation for all the winter competitions. |

Alan Lund, Junior Organiser, writes St Austell, Carlyon Bay and Truro golf clubs played the first round of a junior Tri-angular tournament on Sunday 21st February This competition is aimed at up and coming B team junior players with aspirations of making their respective junior first teams, thus giving them experience of match play conditions against other clubs. An interesting format was devised giving the players the opportunity of playing better ball match play over all 18 holes. Eight players from each club took part with two pairs from St Austell playing against two from Carlyon Bay and two from Truro. The first round was played at Carlyon Bay and home advantage proved to be a big factor with the Bay taking a healthy lead into the next round to be played at St Austell on the 21st March. St Austell first pair of David Menhenitt went down by four holes against a strong opening pair from Carlyon Bay. The second pair of Lucy Lund and Ben Pill restored some of the balance with a very good win against the Truro second pair. Harry Trays and James Dalby were very unfortunate to come across another Carlyon Bay pair in exceptionally hot form and suffered a very heavy defeat. Once again St Austell rallied and in the last match of the day the Omlo twins, aged only 11, won one up with the last put of the day. All matches were played in extremely friendly but competitive conditions and credit must be given to all players for this. The final points tally was Carlyon Bay 93, Truro 77 and St Austell 70. |

Juniors Christmas Scramble - Sun 20 Dec This year we saw a different format in that the Juniors played a Texas Scramble but had to have an adult in each team. We were very pleased that several category one players all agreed to play and everyone was treated to a fantastic Christmas lunch afterwards, kindly sponsored by Club member Chris Royden. One pair of juniors were very fortunate to be paired with former St Austell Golf Club Junior, Karl Morgan, who is home for Christmas but currently a golf professional in America, only recently coaching and playing golf with Clint Eastwood. He also regularly plays with PGA Touring pro, Bobby Clampitt. The day got off to a disappointing start when we learned that the greens were frozen and that it was all temporary greens. This did not dampen the enthusiasm and in sub zero conditions the competition got under way. The standard of golf was very high and less than one shot separated 2nd to 8th place. Club Captain Simon Smith thanked all players for turning out in such cold conditions and particularly thanked the adults for giving up their time to help the juniors. All players were given a gift at the meal (once again kindly donated by Chris Royden) which consisted of three golf balls, each with the Juniors club logo on. Results.

Simon Harper writes - The team of Simon Harper & PJ Lund, Alex Symes & Nigel Tucker and Shaun Harvey & Dan Olver represented the Club in the Maxam Cup at Newquay on Sunday and finished a respectable 9th of 16 teams with a score of 303. Although a long way behind the winners Trevose (279) and second place Newquay (also 279), who could only be separated by a count back of their discounted scores, we were in a large group of nine clubs separated by only 11 shots for 3rd to 11th places. This result means we have comfortably qualified for next years event. In the individual event Simon & PJ finished a creditable tied 11th on 149 while Alex & Nigel tied for 23rd on 154. Unfortunately Shaun & Dan did not fare so well in the afternoon and finished down the field. Due to the clash with Lady Captains Day we did not get our usual support but thanks to those that did attend. The Hawaiian Evening held at the Club last night was a great success with 60 Members and their guests enjoying the music of our now resident DJ's the 2Gs (Glyn Rowett & Gary Bone).
The food, consisting of meat, pasta and salad was followed by barbecued bananas and pineapple with accompanying calorific sauces, and was excellent.
Most people entered into the spirit of the evening by dressing up accordingly. The prizes for most suitably dressed man and women went, unsurprisingly, to Ann & Colin Marshall. (It was ,however, suggested that Colin should have been disqualified for dressing down from his usual sartorial elegance).
All in all an excellent evening enjoyed by everyone present. |

Kevin Metherell's Vice Captain's Day yesterday was a great success despite the fact that the weather was not too kind. The Men's competition was won by Martin O'Brien with 41 points. Andy Allum was closest to the pin in two on the ninth and PJ Lund was nearest to the pin on the sixteenth. The Ladies competition was won by mother and daughter team Annie and Lucy Lund with 39 points. The Juniors nine hole competition was won by Jordan Dingle with 24 points. For full results of the day please click here) The competitions were followed by the presentation of trophies won during April and May and the presentation of a cheque to representatives of the MS Society. (See photographs below) An excellent meal was then served for some 60 members and guests after which we were entertained by vocalist Michelle who was ably assisted (and sometimes not so ably) by various members of the Club. The day raised £437 towards the Captains' Charity which this year is the Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. All in all it was a excellent day and evening. |

Simon Harper competed in the
County Championships at Mullion on Wednesday of last week and
qualified in joint 16th place after rounds of 77 and 69 for a 6
over total of 146 in what was one of the lowest cuts
in championship history - with the play off for the last places
at 150. Unfortunately he drew the No.6 seed, Tom Murtagh
(Truro), in the first round and lost 4 & 3. The one consolation
was that Tom went on to become County Champion beating the
defending champion, Jon Coleman of West Cornwall, 2 & 1 in the
final on Saturday.
